Every day approximately 1,000 applicants register for the opportunity of a new home, according to HDC corporate communications manager Maurisa Findlay. In a telephone interview yesterday, she said HDC had about 1,000 applicants by noon. Findlay said tomorrow 669 applicants will receive HDC units at Carlsen Field, central Trinidad. Carol Thompson, one of the applicants outside the HDC’s office, Port-of-Spain, yesterday said she was seeking her children’s interest in applying for a house.
Thompson, a mother of 12, of Pleasantville, hoped her children would be given a slice of the pie. “I find my children should get a piece of the cake. They need to get also. They have children and things. I am an avid supporter of the UNC. I does have party meetings in my yard,” she said.
However, Thompson said, she and her family had been ignored.
“I am a staunch supporter and the HDC and UNC never give my children nothing. I got my house in Eric Williams’ time and four of my children still live with me. I want them to get houses. One goes by a woman but she does run him and he comes by me,” she added. Janice Caesar, of Carenage, said she never applied for a house because she heard the application took years to process.
However, she hopes her son, Jovelle, 21, who receives public assistance, will apply. “I came to see about my sister’s application, but I was told she had to come herself. I never applied because I heard it takes too long,” Caesar added.
