Police arrested two men on Friday afternoon with a batch of Girls Talk mascara containing 143 packets of cocaine. According to police, two drug smugglers were arrested after officers of the Northern Division stopped a white Mazda transporting the drugs. Head of the Northern Division Snr Supt David Abraham said the men were arrested during an exercise led by him with assistance from Supts Sankar and Balram and Inspector Mark Maharaj between 11 am and 10 pm on Friday.
During a media briefing held at the Arima Police Station yesterday, Abraham told journalists that the officers went to Arthur Murray Crescent, Phase 3, La Horquetta, near TTPost around 4 pm. There they stopped the car with the two men in it, one a Nigerian who is currently awaiting trial for a similar offence and a Morvant man in his late 20’s.
The officers searched a black plastic bag in the car and found a brown box containing several smaller boxes with 143 mascara eye pencils which were stuffed with cocaine. The men are expected to be taken to the Arima Magistrates Court tomorrow.
In an unrelated incident, officers of the Northern Division apprehended two men minutes after they robbed two brothers and their employees of approximately $50,000. Police said around 4.30 pm on Friday, Ian Franco, 49, and his brother Scott, 47, both managers of Franco Trading and Distribution Ltd located at Riverside Avenue, Mt Hope, were at work with six employees when six men including two gunmen robbed them.
While the gunmen held the eight at bay, the remaining four thieves began to load two vehicles parked on the compound with items from the business place. As the men were loading up the cars, one of the workers contacted the police and two of the men were held on the scene. The other four escaped. The two thieves from Trou Macaque, Laventille, are assisting police with their investigations.
Yesterday, Abraham praised his men for their hard work and said that his division was again seeking to earn the coveted prize of best division after winning two years in a row. So far for the year, he said, his officers had recovered 24 guns. Last year they recovered 141, 41 more than their target issued by acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams.
