Poor quality of water is insulting

I live in Couva. I am concerned about the quality of water we have been receiving over the past few years. I have learnt that pure water is tasteless, odourless and colourless. Well, sad to say, the water we have been receiving in our homes on a daily basis has none of those qualities. It leaves me to wonder if WASA and the water-bottling industry have some kind of secret contract. Maybe WASA would provide the same poor quality tap water thereby forcing us to purchase bottled water, in effect boosting sales for the bottled-water industry and, in the end, collect part of the profit.

I feel insecure when I look at my clear drinking glass to see a tinged liquid called potable water. I’m supposed to drink that. And yes, I do because I cannot always afford to purchase bottles of water to supply my everyday needs. I feel threatened because I never know what is in the water I am drinking. I feel insulted because they have been in this water supplying business since, well, eons now. They should have got it right by now. Yet, they have not.

And we have to pay for that dutty water service? That’s where the insult comes in. Every now and again, when I look at the tinged water, I wonder if Minister Ganga Singh drinks it too, has a water filter system, or his own personal supply. The only thing to do to ensure that none of my family members becomes ill is to boil a pot of water for our everyday use.

It’s only by God’s grace a number of people in our community have not reported becoming ill because of this poor management of our precious resource. Please Minister Singh, improve the quality of the water.

Lynette
