A teenager is currently warded under police guard at the Women’s Hospital in Mt Hope. It is believed the girl is connected to the discovery of the body of a newborn baby girl. According to a police report, the baby was found lying on the bathroom floor of the Squadron Club House at the Henry Street, Arouca, on Friday. The newborn babe, police said, had a sheet partly in her mouth and covering the face. The placenta was still attached to the tiny body.

Homicide officers who visited the scene received information and went to the Women’s Hospital in Mount Hope, where they met a 16-year-old girl who fitted the description they got. The girl was said to be in the company of her mother. Police said she was seen at the Squadron club house on Thursday. An autopsy is to be conducted on the baby. Investigations are continuing.

In an unrelated incident, An MTS security officer walking along Harris Promenade, San Fernando, to carry food to a homeless man received a shock when she found him dead on the pavement. The incident happened a stone’s throw away from the San Fernando Police Station, just outside the office of a justice of the peace. According to a police report, Mertlin Smith spoke to the man around 1 pm and he gave his name as Reynold Stoute. On returning around 2.35 pm with food, she realised he was dead.

Police went to the scene and found no signs of violence on the body, but are yet to positively identify the man. Police say he is Indo-Trinidadian and about 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was wearing a pair of plaid short pants, a soiled long-sleeved jersey and was barefooted. DMO Dr Balliram ordered the body’s removal to the San Fernando mortuary for a post mortem.- Rhondor Dowlat & Kevon Felmine
