The Tobago House of Assembly would be strengthening monitoring systems of the recreational marine parks throughout the island.
Marine Parks in Tobago include the Buccoo Reef, the Lagoon area, No Man's Land, and the Gibson Jetty.
Assistant Secretary for the Division of Marine Affairs, Marketing and the Environment Hayden Spencer said at the Post Executive Council news conference on Wednesday, that a meeting was held with stakeholders who utilize the areas on a daily basis. He said over the years the division has been bombarded with numerous complaints about Reef Tour and Jet ski Operators and Users, but it was evident that there are challenges with the rules and regulations which can pose a threat to others in the area.
"There were specific instructions given as to the area of operations and we are still having some challenges in that area where jet skiers are entering the Marine Park posing an imminent danger to users of the park. So I am pleading with the jet ski Operators again after that meeting, and with the general public because the jet ski is fun, but there is an area clearly marked out for the jet ski operators to function," he said.
Spencer said some visitors may not be aware that there are stipulations and they should enquire from officials the specified areas where they should use the jet skis
"We are pleading with the citizens of Tobago and our visitors, that when you enter that area and you are about to rent that jet ski please enquire as to the area that you are required to make use of the jet ski," he said.
Spencer added that the Gibson Jetty at the Bon Accord Wetlands which is also classified as being within the Marine Park, has been cordoned off with a chain and is now under the control of the THA, but the chain is being damaged by individuals wanting to access the area. He said persons are not being debarred from using the Gibson Jetty, but the necessary permissions must be sought.
"So you make your request through the Division for use of the area, you want to use the Gibson Jetty at a particular time, you indicate to the Division of Agriculture, Marine Affairs, Marketing and the Environment and you will be assisted, you will be accommodated."
"I am kindly asking the public to cooperate with the Tobago House of Assembly and to understand that we want control of that area, so things in that area can be done in an orderly fashion" he said.
