The 27-year-old US deportee held with over $1.6 million in drugs and four-high powered guns in San Fernando has been granted $4 million bail.

Vikash Sharma was initially denied bail because the police wanted an opportunity to check with Interpol for information on Sharma’s criminal past.

When he reappeared before San Fernando Second Court Magistrate Suimongal Ramsaran yesterday, it was revealed that in 2008 Sharma had pleaded guilty to larceny in the US and he was deported in 2009.

Defence attorney Jason Jackson said that was disclosed by the defence on the last hearing. However, the police still wanted to check.

The Hermitage Village, San Fernando, resident is charged with possession of four firearms, ammunition, possession of cocaine and marijuana for the purpose of trafficking at his home.

He is also charged with possession of ammunition, firearm components and marijuana at a house at SS Erin Road, Debe, on April 3. The charges were laid by detectives Barry Bacchus and Larry Goddard of the San Fernando CID.

In granting bail, the magistrate said the accused was charged with two of the most serious offences—possession of firearms and cocaine trafficking and he “cannot get small bail.”

“He can always go to a judge to see if he gets it reduced,” the magistrate said before adjourning the matter to May 15.
