Man fatally shot in Barataria

A 44-year-old man was fatally injured last night following a shootout in the Barataria area.

According to police reports around 10pm officers attached to the Morvant CID and Hotspot Patrol responded to a report of loud explosions heard in the Sawmill Avenue, Barataria Area. There they discovered a man lying along the road. The man appeared unresponsive.

The man was identified as Nigel George, also known as “Kumo.” George was from Sawmill Avenue, Granado Street, Small Street, Barataria. He was clad in a blue three quarter jeans and a black jersey. He was unresponsive and there were several spent shells around him.

George was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A preliminary examination of the body revealed that there appeared to be no entry or exit wounds related to any gunshot injuries.

An autopsy is scheduled to be done today at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, to determine the cause of death.

At about 9.45 the police understand that there was a shootout in the area. Ten spent shells were recovered. Investigations are ongoing.
