Political leader of the Opposition PNM, Dr Keith Rowley may have to exercise his constitutional authority, this evening, to recommend a candidate for Diego Martin Central.
Sources say this may happen if the screening committee, chaired by Rowley, does not come to a decision today.
They will meet today at party headquarters, Balisier House, Tranquility Street, Port-of-Spain from 5pm.
PNM general secretary Ashton Ford said this morning that three new candidates - Errol Ashby, Gordon Paul and Barry Ishmael - were nominated for screening.
It will be the third time the committee will be attempting to find a candidate to replace the incumbent MP Dr Amery Browne for the 2015 general election, which is constitutionally due by September.
Browne was rejected when he appeared before the committee on April 2.
Ford confirmed that the PNM constitution provided for "the Political Leader to intervene if a candidate was not found after successive attempts were made."
He said Rowley can intervene and recommend a candidate of his choice to contest the seat for the party, but Ford was quick to point out that "such action by Rowley was not very likely to happen as Diego Martin Central was a frontline constituency for the PNM."
He said a further extension may be granted to allow new nominees to be submitted for consideration.
Up to this morning no nominees were formally submitted to the party by the Chaguanas East constituency for consideration.
Ford said two names were expected to be submitted later today and the nominees will be screened also.
This will be the second attempt by the party to find a replacement candidate for Opposition Senator Diane Baldeo Chadeesingh, who was originally approved but later withdrew her candidacy for personal reasons.
Ford also said that no names were submitted for consideration for the Barataria/San Juan constituency, now held by Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan. On three previous occasions nominees were rejected by the screening committee. Ford said that constituency was not scheduled to be screened today and a date for its screening will be announced in due course.
The PNM has already approved 38 prospective candidates to contest the elections for the 41-seat Parliament.
