Thirty-nine-year-old Elise Romeo, of Adventure Trace, Plymouth, Tobago, was granted $5 million bail after she appeared in the Scarborough Magistrates Court yesterday charged with the possession of cocaine and marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

When the matter was called shortly after 2 pm, Romeo, dressed in a pink top and blue jeans, stood emotionless as the charges were read to her. She was not called upon to plead as the charges were laid indictably.

Two crocus bags and one duffle bag, containing 16 packets of cocaine, weighing 18 kilogrammes, and 50 packets of marijuana, weighing 31 kilograms, were tendered into evidence.

The street value of the cocaine was put at $25 million while the marijuana was $3 million.

The cocaine was described as a high grade, pure Columbian cocaine, while the marijuana is also of a high grade variety .

Romeo, who is a cleaner with the Division of Infrastructure and Public Utilities' Unemployment Relief Programme, was granted the bail with two sureties pending a Clerk of the Peace approval.

Magistrate Antoine noted that due to the quantity of the narcotics and the severity of the crime, conditions had to placed on her bail.

Romeo was ordered to surrender her passport and she must also report to the Old Grange Police Station seven days a week between 6 am and 6 pm.

Acting Sergeant Andell Alleyne of the Tobago Divisional Task Force laid the charges.
