With elections polls giving Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley a lead over Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissesar for the upcoming general election, the PNM leader says he now fears for his public safety.
Speaking at a cottage meeting at the Union Claxton Bay Secondary School on Tuesday night, Rowley said Persad-Bissessar was now in panic mode and was using various means to get him out of the way.
He was referring to the current motion of censure brought against him in the Parliament and the threat of another one.
He also alluded to the Prime Minister’s motion of privilege against him to bring him before the Parliament’s Privileges Committee.
He added: “I warned them, do not fall in love with office. If you fall in love with office you will behave like you mad when you are about to lose office and we seeing that.
“Have you seen the polls? After all they said about, the polls came out and said I am still there and I am not only there but I am ahead of you.
“You could imagine the panic and desperate people do desperate things.
Rowley said whether or not he was ousted from the Parliament as Opposition Leader it would not affect his election campaign.
He said until the Parliament dissolved itself on June 17, he expected Government to seek other ways to get rid of him. “For the first time I feel endangered as a public official in this country.
“For the first time as a politician I feel endangered because the Prime Minister wants me out of the way.”
