The man who police said opened fire on them in Santa Cruz a few weeks ago, resulting in two men being killed by police and another being hospitalised in serious condition, surrendered to police on Tuesday.

According to police reports, the man telephoned a friend, who is now a police officer, and gave himself up at the Arouca Police Station. He has since been transferred to a police station in the Central Division where he will be questioned in relation to his involvement in a robbery and shooting at police.

According to reports, around 3.30 pm on April 16 four men went to the home of a prominent businessman at Rampersad Trace, Monroe Road, Cunupia, and tied up the family before robbing them of cash, jewelry and other valuables. They then escaped in a white Nissan Tiida.

The police were contacted and officers from the Central Division Task Force and CID tracked the suspects to a house at First Street, off Sun Valley Drive, Santa Cruz.

The man who surrendered Tuesday allegedly opened fire on the police on seeing them and the officers fired back. One of his accomplices, Avalon Sanchez, died at the scene while another accomplice, Kevin Thomas, died at hospital. The third man, a fire fighter attached to the Arima Fire Station, is still hospitalised.

In an unrelated incident, a 43-year-old police officer with 20 years service was allowed to remain on $150,000 bail after he appeared in court yesterday charged with indecent assault.

Rajin Singh, who was last attached to the San Juan Sub-Station, appeared before Senior Magistrate Indrani Cedeno.

Singh is alleged to have squeezed a woman’s breast on November 7 last year. The woman made a report and Sgt Rene Katwaroo was assigned to the investigation. Singh was subsequently charged with the offence.

Singh will re-appear in court on May 27.
