‘Loving son’ killed in
hit-and-run accident

It will be a sad Mother’s Day for Cheryl-Ann Chandler whose son, Kadeem Chandler, was the victim of the hit-and-run accident on Sunday.

She said so in an interview yesterday at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, where an autopsy was done on Kadeem’s body.

Kadeem, 26, was a victim of a hit-and-run accident on Sunday in Glencoe.

Chandler, a mother of two, said her son was an affectionate, loving person who brought her joy every time he held her.

“I would normally pass in his room every morning and look for him. I would wake him up to go to work, or just pass in to see him. Now I don’t have anyone to look for.

“He used to run me down just to hug me. I used to run away because I was not the best at showing affection but my son would always catch me and hug me. He always knew how to make me feel loved. He used to call me his mumsie-pooh,” Chandler said.

Chandler, who works as a logistics manager with Unicoma, described her son as a loving child who always worked for everything he got.

“He was a loving child, very respectful. He worked for everything. We never had any problems with him,” she said.

Kadeem was a warehouse manager with Witco for the past five years. He was coming from a boat ride party in Chaguaramas when the accident occurred. Chandler noted that her son’s death was very shocking, especially since he was not much of a party person.

“My son is not a partier. He said his friends convinced him to go to the party. Usually he is just content on staying at home playing video games. He could stay there playing those games for days,” she said.

While Kadeem’s relatives are mourning the loss of the 26-year-old, his daughter Kymora Chandler does not understand that she will never see her daddy again.

“She was his life. She lost her daddy and she does not understand. She just knows that daddy is not here,” Chandler said.

Chandler has another son Rahim who is 23-years-old. She said her son is also grief stricken and in a state of shock with the passing of his brother.

At about 4.50 am on Sunday Kadeem and friends were in a car heading east along the Western Main Road. The car pulled over near Highland Plaza for Kadeem to urinate.

As he was walking to a wall at the opposite side of the road he was struck by a vehicle overtaking his parked car.

Kadeem fell to the ground and the car rolled over him. The car, which hit Kadeem, was a black Toyota Corolla. It was reported that the driver of the car momentarily stopped before speeding off.

Chandler said her family is yet to hear any updates from the police regarding the hit-and-run.

Senior Superintendent Carlile Huggins, head of the Western Division, said: “Nothing has come to light yet on the case.”

He, however, assured that officers attached to the division are working assiduously on finding the driver of the car which hit Kadeem.
