Incumbent Mayaro MP, Winston 'Gypsy' Peters, is the first potential candidate to file nomination papers since the United National Congress began its distribution of nomination papers on Monday.
Peters, who collected his papers himself on Monday, returned to drop off the completed forms at the UNC's headquarters, Rienzi Complex, Couva, just before noon Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters after filing the papers, Peters said he was confident of being selected to represent the party at the upcoming general election.
"I don't really think I have any competition, I think there have two other people, but I'm not sure," he said.
He said recent allegations leveled against the People's Partnership government, such as the emailgate scandal, do not faze him.
"It doesn't faze me much, you will always get that. What happens is the opposition always tries to find what resonates more with people, whether they are true or false, once it sticks as a label on whoever they want to replace."
While he still considers Mayaro to be a marginal constituency, Peters said he hopes that the government's performance thus far will enable them to retain the seat.
