Charges are expected to be laid against the son of a senior superintendent later today arising out of an incident in which he allegedly brandished his personal firearm during an altercation with a man at a club.
The 26-year-old man, who is attached to the Northern Division Task Force, is expected be placed on an identification parade today.
He is expected to be charged by Sgt Byran Daniel with perverting the course of public justice, common assault and demanding money by menace. According to police reports the off-duty police officer, who is also the nephew of a senior superintendent, allegedly got into an altercation with a patron shortly before midnight, last Saturday, at Club Aquarios, Eastern Main Road, Tunapuna. This prompted the security personnel at the club to intervene and they parted the men, both of whom left in separate vehicles.
It is alleged that the officer followed the man to his Arouca home and drove his car into the man’s front gate, mere moments after the man had entered his home and closed his gate.
The man rushed outside and demanded that the officer pay him for the damage the officer had caused. He refused and the man slapped the officer, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time.
The men struggled, after which the officer pulled out his personal firearm and fired several rounds in the air. The incident was reported to the Tunapuna Police Station where Sgt Eric Parks was assigned to investigate.
The matter was handed over to the Professional Standards Bureau this week.
Investigations are continuing.
