Three days after Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner stated there was a link between Fifa’s millions and the successful People’s Partnership 2010 political campaign, former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj has asserted that Warner pumped “millions of dollars” into the United National Congress (UNC) for its 2010 campaign.
“I have spoken to Warner and he has spoken to me since his arrest,” Maharaj told reporters in St Augustine on Saturday during a law conference hosted by the T&T Legal Network, as he said Warner was innocent until proven guilty. “Mr Warner has assisted the UNC. I was in the UNC. He has given financial and political assistance to the UNC. He has assisted the Prime Minister. He has given financial donations to the party.”
Maharaj said despite his past misunderstanding with Warner, “we have been friends. I have remained friends with Warner. We talk.” Warner and Maharaj made up the Ramjack faction that demanded reform in the UNC but subsequently crumbled. Asked if the sum was millions of dollars, Maharaj said, “Oh yes, millions of dollars. And if Warner pay a bill for the finance campaign he is making a contribution to the UNC campaign. In the 2010 general election I know of Warner’s assistance to the UNC.”
In the last general election, Maharaj said, “if you wanted to give a donation to the (People’s) Partnership you had to write three cheques, one to the party and two to other individuals. It is well known. The time will come when some of those cheques will surface. So I don’t know why people are trying to say that Warner did not help the UNC.”
