A shooting spree early yesterday morning in the Plum Mitan, Sangre Grande left an 11-year-old boy injured. According to reports, around 3.55 am Bradyn Jurie, of Settlement Road, was asleep when his parents were jolted awake by loud explosions. When they checked on their son, they found him lying in his bed bleeding from injuries to his abdomen and foot.
Jurie was taken to the Sangre Grande District Hospital where he was warded in a stable condition last night. Less than ten minutes later at 4.02 am, 67-year-old pensioner Simraj Jurie, the grandfather of the injured boy, was also awaken by the sound of gunshots. The pensioner, who lives at the seven and a quarter mile mark on Plum Mitan Road, got out of bed and checked his home only to discover shards of glass scattered on the floor. Near the window, he found bullet holes. He was not injured in the incident.
A few minutes later at 4.10 am, the police received a report of a Nissan B-16 vehicle set on fire along the Plum Mitan Road. Officers found the remains of a Molotov cocktail near the vehicle, which they believe was used by the attackers. Spent shells were recovered at the scene of both shooting incidents, police said.
In a separate exercise by Eastern Division officers, between 1 am to 9 am throughout a number of communities in the Division—Valencia, Sangre Grande, Toco, Manzanilla, Mayaro and Rio Claro—23 people were arrested.
Eleven were held for possession of narcotics. Eight were held on outstanding warrants. One man was held on robbery related offences, one for driving under the influence of alcohol, and one for driving without a permit and insurance. A man was also held for an outstanding investigation on a report of malicious wounding.
And in joint raid officers from the North Eastern Division Task Force and the Morvant CID seized an AR-15 machine gun and a pump action shotgun in Barataria. Police said around 6 am, police officers found the two-high powered weapons along with a magazine containing a quantity of 7.62 ammunition hidden in some bushes. No one was arrested in connection with the weapons and ammunition.
