As Fyzabad grandmother Linda Thomas recovers at hospital from last week’s acid attack, her common-law husband, Peter Charles, appeared before a Siparia magistrate charged with the attack.
Shortly after lunch yesterday, Charles, 64, of New City Avenue, Fyzabad, was taken before magistrate Taramatie Ramdass in the Siparia First Court, accused of throwing a corrosive liquid on Thomas with the intend to cause grievous bodily harm.
On Sunday, Charles was discharged from the San Fernando General Hospital where doctors had to make an assessment on his health. He was charged by WPC Vincent of Fyzabad Police Station.
His attorney Ramnarine Soorgansingh told the court Charles, a father of six, was a construction worker who had no criminal offences on his record. However, Ramdass refused his application for bail after prosecutor Sgt Sheldon Ablacksingh said police were yet to get a trace on his criminal history and that Thomas was still warded at hospital.
Ramdass remanded him into custody until Wednesday as she ordered police to provide a trace of Charles’ criminal history and an update on Thomas’ health. Hospital officials said Thomas did not have any surgery and has regained her sight. According to police Charles and Thomas got into an argument on September 22 and he allegedly threw muriatic acid on her face. He was later arrested at a house at Saltmine Trace, Fyzabad, on Thursday. Police were able to find him after an anonymous caller contacted police after his photograph was displayed during a television programme.
