Former T&T Ambassador to Brazil Robert Torry passed away shortly before noon yesterday. And Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says his passing was “a great loss for the nation.” In a statement issued hours after his death yesterday Persad-Bissessar said Torry would be remembered as a former Ambassador to Brazil. She said however, he was “a true servant of the people and had an energy and dedication that motivated and inspired us all.”
She said he played a critical role in helping to establishing the excellent relations Brazil and T&T share today. The PM said he worked hard to increase diplomatic and trading relations between the two countries. “His passing is a deep and tragic loss for our politics, his community and indeed, our country ,” she added.
Torry was a founding member of the COP. Party general secretary Clyde Weatherhead said although Torry was ailing he remained active in the party and was a truly committed member and dedicated fighter. He said Torry previously represented the party on the Diego Martin Regional Corporation. Last year, Torry unsuccessfully endorsed Arts and Multiculturalism Minister Dr Lincoln Douglas in the party’s leadership elections. He leaves to mourn his wife, Liz, the other family members.
Weatherhead said Torry was “a vigorous contributor to the work of the COP and a friend and mentor to those with whom he worked or came into contact.” He said the party “fully appreciate’s his contribution to party and country.”
