The teenager who videotaped a wheelchair-bound man allegedly being assaulted by two police officers has been charged with two criminal offences. The 17-year-old schoolboy appeared in the San Fernando Magistrate’s Court charged with resisting arrest and using obscene language.
The teenager’s video, which went viral on Facebook, led to charges being laid against the two police officers for allegedly abusing paraplegic Robby Ramcharitar on High Street, San Fernando, last December. When the teenager appeared before Fifth Court Magistrate Ava Vandenburg-Bailey he was accompanied by his mother. The magistrate reminded reporters that his name could not be published because he was a minor.
The offences allegedly took place on February 7 on High Street. The teenager pleaded not guilty to resisting PC Mohammed in the execution of his duty and using obscene language. His attorney Michelle Rampaul said the teenager was a Form Four student and was granted bail by a Justice of the Peace over the weekend.
She asked for disclosure, including the names and rank of all the police officers present at the time of the incident and the officers who videotaped it. The matter was adjourned to March 23 for disclosure and to set a date for trial.
