Former prime minister Patrick Manning did the right thing when he withdrew from consideration as a candidate to contest the next general election. That was the general consensus from constituents of San Fernando East yesterday. However, many of them said they saw a continuing role for him in politics as an advisor and mentor. There was also solid support for Randall Mitchell, the young lawyer and businessman who has succeeded Manning as the candidate to contest the 2015 general election for the PNM.
However, Manning himself remained incommunicado as attempts were made to find out why he contemplated contesting the seat he held for almost 44 years, only to backtrack at the last minute. Calls to his home telephone were answered by his wife Hazel who said she was not available for comment and that Manning was out. A visit to his home was also met by a member of the household staff who said the Mannings were not at home.
His sister Dr Petronella Manning-Alleyne said she was in no position to comment on her brother’s decision, “as I don’t really have a clue as to what is going on. I have been swamped with work. “As far as I am concerned, the decision is entirely up to him and I would abide by any decision he really makes and I will continue to be supportive of him.” She said she was not able to speak with him as his telephone was very busy for the entire day.
PNM PRO Faris Al-Rawi, who is also contesting the San Fernando West seat for the PNM, expressed his gratitude to Manning saying he was extremely grateful for his leadership. Former prime minister Basdeo Panday said Manning had a long and distinguished career and while he was leaving electoral politics he still had a contribution to make.
