Officers of the Northern Division believe they have foiled a carjacking ring targeting SUVs in their division, following the arrest of four men they say were involved in the armed robbery of Magistrate Ejenny Espinet.
According to police reports, the four men, ranging in ages between 21 and 25, from Tunapuna were arrested yesterday around 1 am, during a special exercise led by Inspector Mark Maharaj and Sgt Robert of the Northern Division. Police say they are looking for more men in connection with the carjacking ring.
According to police, around 3.15 pm on Wednesday, Magistrate Espinet, 56, who presides over matters in the Port-of-Spain Family Court and lives in Trincity, parked her bronze-coloured Hyundai Tucson along the road opposite her home. As she exited her vehicle, Espinet was accosted by two men of African descent, one of whom was armed. The gunman took the car keys from Espinet and the two bandits then drove off.
Espinet contacted the police and officers from the Maloney Police Station, Arouca CID and Northern Division Task Force responded.
The officers later found the vehicle, valued at $160,000, abandoned in the carpark at Building Two, Maloney.
