There have been 3,411 suspensions reported to the Education Ministry, including 160 cases for bullying and 1,017 for fighting, Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh said yesterday.
Replying to an Opposition question in Parliament yesterday, he said the matters for which suspensions were issued also included disregard for authority (537 cases), sexual misconduct (152 cases) and breaking classes (97 cases).
He said he’d signed about 50 orders for suspensions.
Gopeesingh said students placed on seven-day suspensions, now, also receive counselling during that time, unlike previously when they received no help.
On another Opposition question, Energy Minister Kevin Ramnarine said Petrotrin chief financial officer Ronald Huff earned $147,500 monthly plus a car allowance of $15,000 and housing allowance of $28,652.
He said former Petrotrin official Malcolm Jones earned a $162,000 basic salary. He said Huff was the best fit due to his experience and has the financial management skill Petrotrin needed in various areas.
