Patients are generally happy with the healthcare at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital but the few negative cases are the ones that go viral said Bernadine Farrell, Head Nurse of the Labour Ward at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (PoSGH).
“If you have a thousand good deliveries and you have two negatives, you will not hear about the good ones. However, there is the general consensus that patients are happy about the conditions here. This month we have had 80 births and we would have had one negative episode which happened day before yesterday. That was one mother that was not totally co-operative, she was a but delirious and ran out of the birthing suite and had to be followed by the doctors and nurses and doctors, who brought her back. Unfortunately, that went viral,” she told the media yesterday at Maternity Ward, PoSGH.
According to information from the Maternity Ward, between 100 to 130 babies are born each month, and on average about ten babies are born daily at the PoSGH.
Mother’s Day joy
The North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) yesterday gave out hampers to mothers who gave birth over the weekend.
Farrell said the first baby to be born on Mother’s Day at the PoSGH yesterday was a boy, Tyler Yee. The mother Akeda Miguel was excited and happy to give birth to her baby boy on the day that pays tribute to mothers. The baby was born at 8.42 am and weighs five pounds three ounces.
Miguel, a first-time mother, said the baby is an early surprise and she was due to give birth to the baby next month. “I was supposed to give birth on June 7 so this was a pleasant surprise. I was out having dinner last night and my water bag burst. But today I am happy. I have no complaints, as they treated me well here as a patient,” she said.
Farrell said that for a first-time mother Miguel did well while giving birth.
