New mothers at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) were treated to desserts and gifts for Mother’s Day yesterday. First-time mother Sykiee Francis, 24, gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 1.34 am on yesterday. Francis’s son was the first to be born at the Port-of-Spain and San Fernando hospitals yesterday.
Francis spoke to the T&T Guardian from her hospital bed yesterday as the group Friends of the San Fernando Hospital distributed hampers filled with baby supplies and cupcakes throughout the maternity ward. Though at first she seemed reserved and quiet, Francis, who lives in Siparia, could not hide her excitement once asked about her son.
“I was a whole week overdue. I am just so happy he is healthy and perfect,” she beamed. Weighing 7.8lbs, Francis’s bundle of joy has been named Kimani, which means ‘strong one.’ Kimani lay contentedly in her arms, wrapped in a blue blanket during the interview. When asked whether she had any idea she would give birth on Mother’s Day, she replied with a smile, “Well it looks as though I planned it like this.”
She described her months of carrying Kimani as perfect and says her fierce mommy instincts have already kicked in.
