Police are probing the murder of Super Industrial Services Ltd’s (SIS) supervisor Vijay Basdeo who was shot dead yesterday during a home invasion in Claxton Bay. Investigators are yet to rule out robbery as a motive for his murder but said it did not appear that anything was stolen from his Abraham Street home.
According to Senior Supt Johnny Abraham, Basdeo, 35, was about to leave for work around 5.30 am and as he walked into his garage, he was approached by the gunman who ordered him back to the house. He was forced to tie his wife Feroza Mohammed’s hands with duck tape before he was taken to a bedroom where he too was tied up by the gunman. Mohammed was able to free herself and as she ran to neighbours for help, Basdeo was shot once in the head.
Central Division police, including Abraham, Insp Terrence Williams and Sgt Jitindra Toolaram, responded and were able to gather information on the killing but said they could not reveal any details as they needed to protect the witnesses. Police are also trying to determine whether the murder was work related as neighbours reported seeing a gunman fleeing Basdeo’s home in a coverall resembling those worn at the company.
Even the dozens of colleagues who gathered outside Basdeo’s home debated whether it was an inside job. One supervisor speculated it could have been a grudge created by someone who was laid off. Relatives said even though Mohammed heard the gunshot, it was only when she saw undertakers removing her husband’s body she believed he was dead.
