A recently opened section of the Point Fortin Highway between Golconda and Debe has recorded its first road fatality. Savi Chatoorgoon, 18, of Devil’s Woodyard, Hindustan, died at around 5.40 am yesterday when a car driven by her boyfriend Adrian Koylass, 21, plunged off a precipice on the northbound carriageway. The accident occurred about 100 feet from the Papourie Road Flyover.
Koylass, of Tarodale, Ste Madeleine, suffered a broken leg and minor cuts. Police said the couple were returning home from the Mumbai Club in Debe and had just dropped off their friend Dillon Suruj at his Derek Road home in Debe when the accident occurred. They said there were no skid marks on the road and it appeared that the car slammed into a highway sign and spun out of control before plunging 300 feet down the precipice.
Chatoorgoon, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pinned beneath the car and died on the spot. The body was taken to the mortuary of the San Fernando General Hospital where an autopsy will be done today. Cpl Harripersad is continuing investigations.
