After surviving a crash which killed two people yesterday, police said taxi driver Azim Mohammed got in another vehicle and left the scene.

Mohammed was at the Couva Police Station late yesterday assisting with the inquiry into the crash which claimed the lives of Nicholas Guevara, 27, of Siparia, and an unidentified woman.

A report stated that around 4 am, Mohammed, of Johnstone Street, San Fernando, was driving north along the Southern Main Road, Mc Bean Village, Couva, in a Toyota Altis with the woman sitting in the front passenger’s seat and Guevara in the back.

On reaching Calcutta #1 Road, opposite the Green Door Bar, he lost control of the vehicle which overturned and crashed into a wall.

Police said the impact of the crash caused the woman to land in an empty lot nearby.

Residents who rushed to help said they saw Mohammed crawl out the car while Guevara was still trapped inside. They said when police led by ASP Ablack and Cpl Collymore arrived at the scene, the taxi driver got into a Nissan Sunny B12 and left.

Fire officers had to cut the wreck to free Guevara but he was already dead.

A relative said Mohammed had been taken to the Couva Police Station by his family.
