A 35-year-old man was stabbed to death while defending his wife from a mentally ill former US soldier on Sunday at Big Yard, Point Cumana.

According to police reports, around 6 pm, Gerard Marin, a gypsum installer was heading home with his wife, Rachael, when they saw the suspect and confronted him for harassing their daughters.

Police said during the confrontation the 28-year-old deportee took out a knife and stabbed the woman twice in the shoulder. Her husband was stabbed multiple times when he intervened.

He was taken to the St James Medical Complex where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Speaking with the media at the Forensic Science Centre, St James yesterday a relative of Marin, who asked not to be named, described Marin as a hard working man who always provided for his family.

“He died trying to save his wife. He was a very hard working fella, very humble. Always providing for his family. Is more than once he (the accused) attack people in area and the police never do nothing,” the man said.

The suspect, police said, is now in custody.

In an unrelated killing, Roshan Mohan, was shot in the head and upper body on Saturday night while liming at the home of a friend’s friend at Mango Rose, Laventille.

Police reports said around 11.30 pm, Mohan, of Garden Village, Arouca was visiting friends when he was called out by residents of the area. While talking with the men he was shot and killed. Police who were on patrol heard the gunshots and found the injured man. He was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Speaking with the media yesterday Mohan’s father, Roland, said his son left home to head for Ariapita Avenue to lime. The 19-year-old went with friends from work but first went with one of his friends to Mango Rose to meet a woman. The woman has since moved out of the area after she was threatened following the murder.

Mohan said he was told that Roshan was liming with the men who killed him earlier and had a smoke with them.

Police believe Mohan was killed because he “looked like a Muslim” in an area controlled by the Rasta City gang affiliates.
