Fatal accidents which claimed five lives marred Father’s Day celebrations yesterday. Sangre Grande police said the first of the crashes occurred at around 12.30 am. Easlom Lankim, 29, was driving his car southward along the Toco Main Road in the vicinity of the one-mile mark, when the car ran off the western side of the road into a yard and collided with three parked cars. Two of the occupants in Lankim’s vehicle were killed instantly.
They have been identified as 21-year-old Kyle Sorzano of Toco Main Road and Keston Thomas of Reid Lane. Lankim, who suffered injuries, was taken by EHS to hospital and remained warded up to late yesterday. In the other accident, at around 4.45 am, Sherwin Charles and Gisselle Friday, both taxi drivers, were in a silver Tiida, HDH 1787. Friday was driving the vehicle along the Valencia stretch. Eyewitnesses said Friday overtook a line of traffic and collided head-on with an oncoming truck. The accident occurred shortly after the new roundabout.
Charles, 41, who was seated on the front passenger seat died on the scene. Friday, of Casarina Drive, Valencia, was taken to the Sangre Grande Area Hospital where she remains warded. ASP Khanhai visited the scene and made an appeal to drivers to exercise caution on the roads, especially considering the rainy season upon us.
He also said that motorists must be mindful of the other users on the road as the behaviour of a driver can lead to unfortunate circumstances for other people. Investigators are working on the theory that alcohol may have been a factor to consider in both accidents. Just after 8 am, Dave Christian and Isiah Jones, both of Block 22, Laventille, were killed at Sixth Avenue, Barataria, when the silver Lancer motorcar they were travelling in made a left turn and collided with another car on the Priority Bus Route.
