With a consistent focus on education, CIBC FirstCaribbean has made a donation to the Adult Literacy Tutors Association (Alta) to assist the organisation with providing the only comprehensive, structured, adult literacy programme in T&T, a release said.
Alta tutors, with the support of partners like CIBC FirstCaribbean, ensure that approximately 2,000 registered Alta students are taught annually. It is expected that Alta Online, the web-based format of the Alta programme currently in development, will reach an even broader range of clientele, as it seeks to expand the region’s access to the written word through technology.
At a cheque handover ceremony recently held at the Bank, CIBC FirstCaribbean managing director Anthony Seeraj said the Bank was very enthused to make a contribution to Alta. “As a responsible corporate citizen, we are committed to giving back to the community. We hope that this donation helps Alta continue to make a substantial difference in the lives of its present and future students, and improve our nation’s literacy rate.”
M’aisha Thomas, Resource Development officer at Alta, thanked CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank for the generous donation, remarking that it was evidence of the Bank’s commitment to capacity building in the national community.
“This funding will make a significant contribution to our community class venues in the Port-of-Spain region, ensuring that our students have free access to literacy instruction via trained tutors who are themselves guided by experienced Alta coordinators, to ensure the highest standards of programme delivery,” Thomas added.
